PHT Icon What is Eclipse and the Eclipse Foundation?
Eclipse is an open source community, whose projects are focused on building an open development platform comprised of extensible frameworks, tools and runtimes for building, deploying and managing software across the lifecycle. The Eclipse Foundation is a not-for-profit, member supported corporation that hosts the Eclipse projects and helps cultivate both an open source community and an ecosystem of complementary products and services.

The Eclipse Project was originally created by IBM in November 2001 and supported by a consortium of software vendors. The Eclipse Foundation was created in January 2004 as an independent not-for-profit corporation to act as the steward of the Eclipse community. The independent not-for-profit corporation was created to allow a vendor neutral and open, transparent community to be established around Eclipse. Today, the Eclipse community consists of individuals and organizations from a cross section of the software industry.

This month, the Eclipse Hawaii User's Group was held over lunch and at the Dept. of Justice on Beretania St. in Honolulu, HI on 12/16/08.  This was an awesome meeting with IBM providing sandwiches and Pacific Hi-Tech providing a presenter, Greg Hester.

Eclipse Users

We had over 20 persons in attendance and Greg brought along two of his sons to talk about technology in Hawaii. Josiah Hester, Freshman at Clemson University in South Carolina, described how Eclipse is used by students at Clemson on Java, C++ and PHP projects.  Nathan Hester, 11 years old, showed off his Lego NXT robot.  Everyone got a chance to play with the robot and to see how its is programmed.

Greg Hester, CEO of Pacific Hi-Tech, then gave a presentation on Eclipse and how it can be used to build web applications. Greg showed some Eclipse basics such as perspectives, editors, the debugger and scrapbooks to name a few.  Greg also demonstrated and extended a web application as part of the presentation.

Is Hawaii only about tourism?  Not so!

Greg Hester, CEO of Pacific Hi-Tech, and Steve Sakata of IBM had the opportunity to appear on the Mike Buck radio show at KHVH 830 AM on Dec 4th, 2008. Mike talked to Greg & Steve about technology in Hawaii and how the presence of companies like Pacific Hi-Tech is decreasing the "Brain Drain" on Hawaii.  Greg & Steve also pointed out that there is a growing tech community in Hawaii with several user's groups to support the community.

Project Zero is a new technology incubator centered around agile development and the next generation of dynamic Web applications.

“Project Zero introduces a simple environment for creating, assembling and running applications based on popular Web technologies. This environment includes a scripting runtime for Groovy and PHP with application programming interfaces optimized for producing REST-style services, integration mash-ups and rich Web interfaces.”

Project Zero includes both a development and runtime environment for building web applications and services. The interface seems intuitive and powerful. This is an IBM created open source project which ramps up to the IBM products called sMash and silverstone. Project Zero also includes plug-ins for Eclipse!
